• In honor of Black History Month we are featuring Marcus Moshiah Garvey Jr. (17 August 1887 – 10 June 1940).  Garvey was an influential political leader, publisher, journalist, entrepreneur and orator.  He founded the UNIA-ACL and was a key figure in the implementation and creation of the African American flag.  The flag, known by many other names (the UNIA flag, the Marcus Garvey flag, the Universal African flag, the International African flag, the Black Liberation flag and the Pan-African flag to name a few), was formally adopted on August 13, 1920.  Garvey’s essential ideas about Africa were stated in an editorial in the Negro World entitled "African Fundamentalism", where he wrote: "Our union must know no clime, boundary, or nationality… to let us hold together under all climes and in every country…" Garvey felt strongly that the creation of a flag was a key point in promoting his ideals and unifying people from African, even those abroad.  As Garvey said “Show me the race or the nation without a flag, and I will show you a race of people without any pride”
